Gas prices push inventors to seek alternative fuels

hydrorunner.jpgHILLSBOROUGH COUNTY (Bay News 9) -- Record high gas prices have fueled the owners of Check Engine in Tampa to look to alternative fuels.

John Swangler and his partner developed the Hydrorunner hydrogen on demand system. They say it can double gas mileage.

"If we can help, we'll help," Swangler said. "We're trying to get independent of fossil fuels."

This is how the Hydrorunner works: A big box sits in the back of the vehicle, and it's filled with water. The water turns into hydrogen, and the hydrogen helps the gas burn more efficiently.

The systems can cost up to $10,000.

"The cost will definitely come down with more improvements," Swangler said.

The Hyrdrorunner is one of many alternative ideas that are picking up speed.

French fry grease, soybeans and citrus peels have also made headlines.

"We're realizing our conventional fuels are depleting," said Yogi Goswami, University of South Florida alternative energy expert.

Goswami is watching the alternative energy world grow. He thinks food byproducts for fuel make sense.

"The only thing I caution about is when we try to use what we could use as food for biofuels," Goswami said. Then we have an ethical question."

He thinks hydrogen will play a part in the future, but it may be a while.

"I think it will be sometime before we see any economical use of hydrogen," he said.

With high gas prices, inventors are taking more and more out of the box ideas for a test drive.

Scientists say consumers should be skeptical.

"If there is something realistic, you'll here it from scientific reports and scientific media," Goswami said.

Goswami said make sure the product is a scientifically proven through an institution, and it's backed by scientific publications.

"You'll hear a lot of people claim a lot of things, but you've got to be very skeptical," Goswami said.

Hydrorunner G3 Increases Gas Mileage at Least 84-Percent

In a time when people are looking for a way to increase gas mileage and reduce emissions, two men from the Check Engine Service Center in Tampa, Florida have invented a hydrogen boosting system for internal combustion engines (ICE) to do just that. According to John Swangler and William Wylie, their Hydrorunner G3 hydrogen on demand system is able to boost gas mileage and reduce emissions on diesel or gasoline powered ICE vehicles.

On the Hydrorunner website is an independent report from Automotive Testing and Development Services (ATDS) in Ontario, California that verifies that the Hydrorunner G3 was able to increase the fuel economy of a 2001 Ford F-350 diesel by 84-percent. The tests showed that without the Hydrorunner G3 installed, the F-350 averaged 21.1 mpg and with the hydrogen additive system installed the F-350 was able to achieve 38.9 mpg.

According to Swangler and Wylie, a 2-liter reservoir for the water is recommended along with adding water every 3,000 to 6,000 miles. They even say that distilled water is not necessary for their system to work and that tap water or water from a garden hose will work just as well.

The Hydrorunner G3 works by taking electricity from a car’s alternator, electrolyzing water and injecting the hydrogen into the intake manifold. This method displaces some of the gasoline or diesel fuel and helps it to burn more cleanly reducing greenhouse gases by up to 90-percent.

The electrolysis happens without the use of a catalyst common with other hydrogen boosting systems. The Hydrorunner system has also been shown to increase vehicle torque by up to 10-percent. The Check Engine Service Center will install this system for vehicle owners, though no price has yet been published.

In the spirit of full disclosure, I have an advertiser listed on the main hydrogen cars website that also sells a boosting system to run one’s car on water and am dedicated to reporting all such similar and competing technology.

Hydrogen on demand system installed in vehicle improves gas mileage

It is claimed that the Hydrorunner runs solely on tap water, and can be used with ANY engine running on diesel or gasoline with reductions of harmful greenhouse gases by up to 90%.

The innovation comes in the control rather than the manufacture of hydrogen. Hydrorunner has developed a "Hydrogen on Demand" system, that can be controlled via a pre-programmed computer that is specifically designed for any EFI internal combustion or diesel vehicle. Wylie states the technology behind Hydrorunner is not a new one, but is being used in a new way.

According to Hydrorunner the G3 system creates Hydrogen gas on an as-needed basis. Once the ignition is turned on, the system produces H2 gas, eliminating on-board storage issues that other systems encounter. The only maintenance requirement is to add water

Test results indicate that the Hydrorunner doubles gas mileage, increases the engines horsepower by 10%, the torque by 8%, and extends the life of the engine considerably. Results also showed a decrease in the need for oil changes.

It is claimed the Hydrorunner maintains its' safety with an MLSS, a multi-level safety system consisting of manual overrides and temperature shut down sensors. The G3 system has been created with non-corrosive materials, minimal moving parts and hi-impact plastics. The net effect is reported to be a reduction of up to 90% of harmful emissions.

Will your product void my manufactures warranty?
No. According to the Magnusson-Moss warranty act of 1974 states that aftermarket equipment that improves performance does not automatically void a vehicle manufactures original warranty unless the warranty clearly states the addition of the aftermarket equipment automatically voids your vehicle's warranty, or it can be proven that the aftermarket device is the direct cause of the failure.
If further states that under the Manusson-Moss act, a dealer must prove, not just vocalize, that the aftermarket equipment caused the need for repairs before it can deny warranty coverage. If the dealer cannot prove such a claim-or it offers a questionable explanation-it is your legal right to demand compliance with the warranty. This is administered by the FTC(Federal Trade Commission)

How often do I have to add water ?
We recommend adding water every time you go in for a Oil change maybe every 3,000-6,000 miles. I litre of water should give you about 3,000-4,000 miles. We recommend at least a 2 litre water reservoir.

How would you refuel your G3-powered automobile?
Very simply add regular water to the water tank under the hood. It would be the same as adding windshield wiper fluid.
